The Daniel Rolnik Gallery storefront in Santa Monica, CA

On Saturday, December 12th, Zeus toasted the opening of artist Trace Mendoza’s show “Always Lurking” at the Daniel Rolnik Gallery in Santa Monica. While we missed the flooding (a literal flooding of the gallery that commemorated when Trace’s college dorm room flooded and he lost all his work but also gained a new perspective), we were there to celebrate with friends of the artist as well as many Los Angeles-based creatives. Owner Daniel Rolnik went full Santa mode, dressing up as the Big Guy himself and keeping his beard nice and long for the event.

“Always Lurking” was Trace’s first solo show, though he has already worked with the likes of Hurley and the US Open of Surfing as well as had his prints transformed into limited-edition Converse sneakers.

We were fortunate enough to be guided around the gallery to view Trace’s intricate work, much of which originates from his sketchbooks. Filled with color, cultural references, and irreverence, the exhibit is a whole lot of fun. There are also many references to Trace's native Orange County. We got some shots around the gallery and wanted to share them exclusively with Zeus Beard Blog readers!

For our readers who live in the LA area or who plan to visit soon, we highly recommend experiencing the exhibition for yourself – “Always Lurking” runs through this Friday, January 1st, 2016, and is free to the public!

If you want to learn more about the inspiration behind Trace Mendoza's work and facial hair, check out our interview with the artist here. Full show details are below the photos.
