Fighting cultural stereotypes and the inspiration behind the beard

"The stereotype for most Asians is our bodies are like dolphins, smooth with no hair," he joked.
He admitted that like many Asian men who ascribe to a clean-shaven beauty standard, he too once rocked a fresh-faced look.

"I said if there was ever a time to grow it, now would be it. That way during the awkward stage my excuse could be I'm growing it to bring awareness," he said. "I'm so glad I did because I had no idea at the time how much it would reinvent my life."
While a clean-shaven style satisfies cultural implications about remaining youthful, Doan embraced his new beard because of its professional, mature flare.

At 31-years-old he said he was tired of looking like a teenager.
"Growing a beard makes you look older, but not in a bad way," he said. "Growing a beard adds a certain ruggedness, manliness and edginess."

Doan learned that growing a beard is both a "commitment and a process." For him, that process is an ongoing one.
He said he can't quite pinpoint how long it took him to grow a beard because he still considers it to be growing and improving everyday. His main styling concern is maintaining trims to ensure his beard grows in evenly and stays looking sharp.
First impressions of Zeus

Doan said he tried a few products before finding Zeus but never really fell in love with any.
To him, many other brands delivered a lackluster performance in terms of name, branding and packaging. Then when online shopping one day for new beard products, he found Zeus.
"I actually picked up Zeus beard balm first because I didn't have any and bought it simply because I love Greek mythology and I love the packaging," he said. "I keep using Zeus products and recommend them to my friends because you can truly tell the difference in the quality of the products."

STEP TWO: MOISTURIZING HIS BEARD
STEP THREE: HANDLING HAIR AND BODY CARE
"From there I spray the Zeus deodorant. Then I blow dry my hair and use Zeus clay pomade or braid it into a bun."

When it comes to his beard game, there's always one girl in Julian Doan's corner, his five-year girlfriend Diane Chang, 28. One of the reasons he stuck with Zeus was because of Chang's positive reaction.
"My girlfriend loves the smell. She always compliments how great my face smells. Women pay attention to that," he said.

Chang said when Doan told her he wanted to grow a beard, she was "all for it" and curious to see how it would turn out.
"I feel like it's definitely added an edge to his look and I think he looks super hot! I definitely do see a change in his attitude. He's shown up more confident in who he is as a man," Chang said.

Julian Doan facial hair insight and advice
When it comes to beard advice, Julian Doan suggests remaining patient."Growing facial hair, at least for me, is like falling asleep. It happens slowly then all at once. I have friends who can grow a beard in two weeks that took me two months," he said.

In fact, giving your growing beard a regular full shave is counterproductive to your cause, he said.
While shaving may be a defensive strategy to cope with a patchy beard, Doan suggests waiting the awkward phase out. In his experience, some areas on his face took two to three months before finally growing hair.
"The key is to take care of what you have, while you grow it out to what you want," he said.

The right way to invest in your beard is through your diet and exercise, Doan said. He suggests increasing testosterone, which will not only improve beard growth but also support muscle development.
He said the easiest way to increase testosterone is to make sure your diet is rich in protein and to exercise regularly.
To stay on schedule, Doan tracks his macros and makes sure to maintain a balanced diet of daily carbs, proteins and fats.
