Tanner Goods was founded in 2006 by Jevan Lautz and Sam Huff, both of whom grew up in a small mountain town in central Oregon. The town’s economy relied greatly on handmade wares and had a thriving tack and saddle industry. When Huff and Lautz formed Tanner Goods, they fused the traditions of their childhood with modern design. Under the mentorship of famous Washington saddle maker (and former bull rider) L.P. Streifel, the two began crafting leather goods at Tanner Goods’ headquarters in Portland, Oregon.

Today, all production takes place under one roof. From initial design to final packaging, this keeps quality high. One of our favorite pieces from the brand is the multitasking Nomad Duffle in Waxed Field Tan.

A sturdy, good looking weekender is a vital piece to have in your wardrobe, especially now that the days are longer and camping trips/getaways are calling your name. The Nomad Duffle is crafted to suit an active lifestyle: it can be carried by hand, worn as a backpack, or slung over your shoulder. It also expands to fit whatever you need to stash away – simply undo the buckles to expand the body from a length of 22 inches to 30 inches. Interior pockets are roomy, and there’s even more storage space via the two gusseted exterior pockets.

The Nomad Duffle is with no doubt a looker, but the construction is where it’s at: a thick 18 oz. waxed filter twill canvas body enhanced with vegetable-tanned Cambara English bridle leather, secured shut by brass hardware.

At $400, the weekender doesn’t come cheap, but here’s why you should make the investment:

Artisan-honed bridle leather

Only experienced leather artisans can properly vegetable tan leather. Vegetable tanning involves processing leather with a combination of wood, fruit, leaves, and other organic material. The whole process is painstaking, taking up to 60 days. Tanner Goods employs Herman Oak Tannery, which has operated in St. Louis, Moussouri since 1881, for this purpose.

English bridle leather holds its shape and retains its color.

Waxed canvas is tough

If outdoor adventuring is your jam, waxed canvas will keep your stuff dry and clean under any weather condition. Plus, the canvas will only get better over time, becoming softer and smoother as you use it – as well as gaining character. 18 oz. filter twill is the heaviest weight canvas available through Tanner Goods, which means it’s incredibly durable.
