How To Prevent and Treat Beard Acne

How To Prevent and Treat Beard Acne

No matter what stage of life you’re in, there are a few things that no one ever wants. A top contender for this category is Acne, and for many men out there specifically Beard Acne. Long time lovers of the beard already know that it’s no easy feat to keep it polished. There are many things to keep in mind, such as beard dandruff and scratchy beards but everyone can argue that beard acne is the most undesirable.

Why Do I Get Beard Acne?

So, why do you get beard acne? There could be a number of different factors contributing to this. Oil and sebum tend to collect at the base of the hair follicle, this is especially true with longer beards as your oil glands may try to work extra hard to make sure your hair stays hydrated. This overtime production can clog your pores and produce acne. Combined with poor hygiene, this is a surefire way to get pimples. The curly nature of some beards also contribute to ingrown hairs that can become infected and inflamed when poor hygiene is involved as well.

How to Prevent Beard Acne

1. Wash your Face/ Beard

It may seem like common sense, but the first thing to focus on is hygiene. You should be investing in a good daily face wash and beard wash routine to rid your skin of acne causing bacteria. If your skin is sensitive, try a formula that is tested for that in mind. A product like Zeus Charcoal Daily Face Wash is good for combination and regular skin as well. In addition to this, adding a good beard washing routine will further ensure that your beard and skin underneath stay clean, preventing further pimples. Zeus Beard Shampoo and Conditioner are strong enough to get the job done, yet gentle enough to wash away any unwanted bacteria.

2. Exfoliate or use a Beard Brush

Acne comes from a buildup of sebum, oil and dead skin that clogs up your pores. This is why it is important to get rid of dead skin that can contribute to the issue. You can do this by either using a gentle physical exfoliant or a chemical exfoliant. They key word here is “gentle”. Although it may be tempting to grab a gritty face scrub, one that is too harsh actually damages the skin more than helps it by creating tears. If you don’t have the time to invest in this extra skincare step than you can always brush your beard. A quality beard brush does a great job of detangling your hair but also acts a gentle exfoliant for your skin as well. Zeus houses beard brushes in a variety of different sizes, so there is a perfect fit for everyone.

3. Keep Skin Hydrated

Contrary to what people believe, it is important to moisturize even the most oily of skins. The key is to moisturize skin that is freshly cleaned. Hydrated skin means less flakes that would eventually assist in clogging your pores. Using a beard oil like Zeus Natural Beard Oil, doubles as hydration for the beard as well as the skin underneath. The oil also comes in a Tea Tree formula that has healing properties for existing acne. If you prefer a thicker texture, try a beard balm conditioner that works similarly to an oil. Remember to work the product into the skin as well as the beard.

4. Keep your hands off your face: no scratching

You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it again the number one tip to prevent acne is to keep your hands OFF your face. This means even when it tempting to give your beard a little scratchy scratch, do not. Instead target the itching issue itself by ensuring your beard and skin are moisturized to the point where itching does not occur. You can do this by using a good beard oil or beard balm.

5. Wash your pillow cases

Every night you go to sleep and every night you use the same pillow. This is a breeding ground for acne causing bacteria. What’s the point of cleansing your face to just lay it down on an unwashed pillowcase? Be sure to wash you pillow cases around once per week to see improvements in your skin.
