How do I start a beard care routine?
A good beard care routine should keep your beard clean, moisturized, and groomed. Luckily, that doesn't involve too much effort and can be achieved using just a handful of products.
To start off, it's good to prep your beard by cleansing it with beard shampoo and conditioner. This will ensure that oils and dirt don't interfere with the rest of your routine and help reduce beardruff and beard itch. Once your beard is clean and prepped it is time to moisturize, this is where you will want to assess the condition of your beard and decide which products will benefit it the most. If you are just looking for moisture, perhaps try a beard oil. If you are looking for some hold and hydration, then try a beard balm. If you have an exceptionally dry beard, then you could benefit from layering a beard balm on top of a beard oil. The condition of your beard can vary from day to day, so it's a good idea to have a variety of products to choose from. Whichever product you choose, you can maximize its effectiveness by using a beard brush or beard comb to evenly distribute the product. This will also allow you to shape and volumize your beard as you see fit. It is important to choose a brush/comb that caters to your specific needs, so you will want to pay attention to the length and thickness of your beard when choosing one. Once you've built a solid routine you can venture out into more specialized categories, such as trimming and mustache care, if needed.
Following this guide should help you get started on building your routine, but if you want to take all the guesswork out of it you can purchase a beard kit that is curated for your specific beard care concerns.
What is the right order to apply beard care products?
To get your beard in shape, start first with Beard Shampoo. Be sure to massage lather up to the skin beneath the beard for a thorough clean. Follow up with Beard Conditioner right after rinsing shampoo suds away. You can leave Beard Conditioner on your facial hair for a few minutes to really let it soak in- almost like a mask.
Once you’ve patted your beard dry, apply a few drops of your favorite Beard Oil. Be sure the oil reaches your skin, too. This will help hydrate skin AND hair to keep your beard healthy and flake free. Using a Beard Brush can help with even oil distribution, as well as massage skin to get blood flowing to hair follicles.
Beard Balm should be applied AFTER oil. Beard Balm is generally a soft beeswax base, which acts as a styling agent as well as a beard moisturizer. Scoop your desired amount and style as you please. Your beard brush can come in handy here, too.
My beard isn't that long- Do I need a Beard Brush or Comb?
We recommend a Beard Brush for all beardsmen, even if you rock a short or cropped beard. Boar Bristle Beard Brushes assist with even oil distribution, gently exfoliate skin to prevent flaking, and encourage bloodflow to beard hair follicles to help new growth.
How do I get rid of beard itch?
Itchiness and irritation are common when growing a beard. The coarseness and sharpness of beard hair can irritate the skin on your neck and face, causing an unpleasent sensation commonly known as "beard itch."
This can be combated by using specially formulated product that will soften hair and moisturize skin. Zeus Beard Shampoo and Conditioners are formulated with skin-first ingredients and are the best place to start. For those with itching and flaking, we specifically recommend our Soothing Beard Shampoo.
The use of a leave-in moisturizer like Beard Oil is also a proven solution to stopping an itchy beard. Zeus offers a wide selection of beard oils and serums to choose from. Those suffering from redness, irritation, and beard flaking should reach for our unscented, tea tree supported Clarifying Beard Oil.
